Five Signs That You Need a Root Canal

Five Signs That You Need a Root Canal
Posted on 02/08/2022

A root canal can be a scary, overwhelming thought. Many of us try to prevent a root canal by brushing, flossing, and taking care of our oral health. However, sometimes it comes up unexpectedly. A root canal is a procedure where the dentist eliminates bacteria from the inside of the tooth and is carefully cleaned and disinfected. But how does one know they need a root canal? At Wachtel Dentistry, our doctors and staff work hard to educate patients on what they need to know about everything about oral health. While we hope no patient needs a root canal, there are signs to look out for to be aware of. Here are 5 signs to look out for in the future!

5 Signs That You Need a Root Canal

  • Unexpected Pain- If you experience spontaneous or unexpected pain on a tooth that comes up "out of the blue", this could be a sign. Because the tooth has decayed to a point that the nerve inside is affected, the tooth is exposed (which can cause pain). The pain can range in severity and with your position (such as when you're sitting, bending over, laying down, etc).
  • A Darkened Tooth- If you notice that a tooth becomes darker in color (such as browning or yellowing), this could be a sign of infection or nerve damage.
  • Gum Issues- Swelling, tender, and/or red gums can signify a problem. If you also happen to see a pus-filled "pimple" on your gum, this can be a sign of infection. Any type of discomfort on or around the gums should be notified by your dental healthcare provider.
  • Hot or Cold Sensitivity- If you're eating or drinking something hot or cold, and notice any extreme pain or sensitivity, contact your dentist. If the feeling lasts for hours after exposure, it may be a sign of an infected tooth and a need for a root canal.
  • Painful Chewing- If you notice any pain while chewing or biting food, this is a sign.
